Chapter 12

INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE

Three years later

Kaya and I were hanging from a branch. We’d been hanging like this for about twenty minutes now. Our muscles didn’t just ache, they moaned and begged for mercy. Sergius ignored us. He calmly watched the coals burn under our feet. The distance that separated my feet from the heat didn’t exceed my height. To save our legs, we had to pull them up.

“Get down,” Sergius commanded.

Just in time. I was about to slip off, hanging on only by my fingertips.

To get down, I had to swing and jump over the coals. Which turned out to be difficult, when your muscles were numb. Once I failed and ended up with my ass on fire. Quite literally. I wouldn’t ever forget it.

The second we landed, we received our next task.

“Complex,” Sergius commanded.

We didn’t even have to think about it. Our bodies knew perfectly well what to do and how to do it. Repeating something for three years straight does that to a man.

Once we were done, Sergius summoned us. He was sitting by the fire, where he habitually prepared a decoction for us. We each took a mug, scooped it up, and sat down next to him, starting to drink in small sips.

Sergius’s hair grew gray. He remained the same strong man as on the day we met, but age slowly crept up on him.

“Your task is to get to the village of Mitrovka. You had time to study the route. The goal is to steal the multicolor plant seeds. Do it discreetly and come back immediately.”

“And what’s the reward for the one who completes the task first?” Kaya asked.

“An improved strengthening potion.”

“Is there a time limit?” I asked this time.

“Try to get it done in a week.”

That was the end of the briefing, and Sergius, whistling, went back to the village. After he bought a wife for himself, he became softer. He was almost a normal person now, and his eyes weren’t as dead as before.

Kaya and I exchanged glances, challenging each other. We both wanted that potion.

And even if there was no reward, I still wasn’t going to give in to some girl.

Three years later, she was still annoying as hell. Kaya was a professional pain in my ass.

“It’ll be easier if we join forces.”

“As if.” She flatly refused me.

Her hair was no longer a dirty haystack. It was replaced by a tight braid of thick, strong, sunny-colored locks. Not the best hairstyle for someone who needed to sneak into someone else’s property. So Kaya tied a scarf around her head. She wore black robes, sewn from dark creatures’ skin and fur. And so did I. We were given these clothes last year and we wore them under ordinary clothes so as not to irritate the villagers. It became our uniform, which Tara had to alter several times to fit our growing bodies.

While I was thinking about Kaya’s hairstyle, she turned away and ran toward the forest. I followed her, but I wasn’t in a hurry.
